Instagram is an amazing platform to showcase ourselves and our work. I am a massive fan and it is my favourite social media platform. I love promoting other brands through my different accounts and some of those brands are my friends. I tag them all. Whether it's to say thank you or just because I love what they do, I make sure that I am completely transparent about it.
As business owners, we have a responsibility to keep it a fun and enjoyable platform for every user. And that means staying professional when interacting with our audiences and other businesses at all times.
Tagging is a fantastic tool on Instagram but only when it’s appropriate and relevant. Firstly, if you are tagging another business from your business account or from your personal account, you have to stay mindful of the following points.
1. The image contains a product from the brand you are tagging.
2. The brand is involved in the creation of that image.
3. The brand features in the image.
4. The brand has contributed towards the image in some way.
5. You are thanking the brand for something.
6. You are giving the brand a testimonial.
7. The content of your image/post is directly linked with the brand.
8. You are reposting one of the brand’s posts.
If you cannot say yes to at least one of the above points then you should refrain from tagging the brand. If you can say yes to it then it’s totally fine to tag the brand. You can even tag yourself.
The number one complaint from the Instagram community relates to irrelevant tagging. Tagging people and brands is a yes, but only when it is relevant. If you want to engage with a brand, firstly, you need to follow them and engage with them on their feed. Then the professional thing to do would be to send them an email with a link to your Instagram. This is the most professional way of being noticed, if that is what you are trying to do.
As a brand you also have the responsibility towards your own brand image and brand values. If users on Instagram tag your brand in their posts but their images do not relate to your brand, your brand’s content or seem unprofessional, then it is time to untag yourself.
One of the most important elements of professionalism is authenticity. That simply means being your authentic self when it comes to engaging with other accounts.
